Geert Belpaeme is a theatremaker, performer and lecturer/researcher at KASK School of Arts in Ghent. He creates performances that blur the lines between theatre, circus, performance, dance and philosophical experiment. Playfulness, abstraction and unbridled imagination are the common thread running through his work.
Throughout the years his artistic language has slowly shifted towards a contemporary form of clownery. For Geert, the clown is a vessel to materialise aggression, violence, absurdity and hopelessness. In his work, situations dynamically flow into one another and characters frequently change identities. By doing so he explores social issues and actively relates to a changing world.
Besides his work as a performing playwright, Geert works as a performer, coach and dramaturge with Bosse Provoost, Alexia Leysen, Alexander Vantournhout & Bauke Lievens, Sinking Sideways, Julian Hetzel and many others.
In September 2024 his first book De Speelse Mens (‘The Playful Human’) was published, which looks at how play is fundamentally interwoven with our experience of the world.
In 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 the everchanging performative act Elephant in the Room is reprised. In September 2025 his new creation Imaginary Numbers will premiere. The tour dates for Imaginary Numbers will be announced later.
