Michiel Vandevelde is a choreographer, dancer and writer. At present he’s also active as a curator at DE SINGEL arts centre Antwerp (B). In these various roles he asks himself which social, economic and cultural initiatives we can deploy to question and transform predominant logics and organising structures.
In his artistic work, Michiel finds the freedom to formulate socio-political questions that are difficult to tackle any other way. Questions relating to sexuality, intimacy, the significance of touch, power, democracy and – inevitably – death: these themes characterise his most recent work. For Michiel, the forged connection between body and soul within a choreography is what makes dance ultimately special.
As a choreographer, he works in the name of both his own non-profit organisation, vzw Disagree, and other organisations, such as fABULEUS (B), Kaaitheater (B), Concertgebouw Brugge (B), Platform-K (B), Pact Zollverein (DE), Theater Neumarkt (CH), Müncher Kammerspiele (DE) and Wiener Festwochen (AT). His work is showcased throughout Europe in both public spaces and the blackbox.
In 2024–2025 and 2025-2026 Michiel Vandevelde will reprise Le Sacre du Printemps (Michiel Vandevelde & Theater Neumarkt) and the participatory ritual Infinite Dances. Meanwhile, the last performances of The Goldberg Variations (Michiel Vandevelde & Platform-K) are being played.
All info on these productions can be found here.
Besides the productions above, Michiel will also create out of hands (in collaboration with fABULEUS). It will premiere in April 2025 (Leuven STUK, B) and will be again on tour in 2025-2026. Tourdates for out of hands can be found here.
