Marah Haj Hussein

Marah Haj Hussein is a Palestinian dancer, actress, and theatre maker. She studied dance at the Royal Conservatory (Antwerp) and drama at KASK (Ghent). In her work, she explores power structures rooted in language, often bringing together theatre and dance in physical, political, and poetic encounters on stage.

Mother tongue is a recurring theme in all her performances. For Marah, it is a symbol of identity, memory, power, and resistance. Drawing on her own multilingual background (Palestinian Arabic, Hebrew, English and Dutch), she investigates how languages ​​are shaped by colonial history, migration, and political power dynamics. In doing so, she connects intimate experiences with broader societal and political questions.

During Het TheaterFestival in 2023, she won the Roel Verniers Prize, and during Het TheaterFestival in 2025, she received the award for the most appreciated acting performance under 35 for her solo Language: no broblem.

In Language: no broblem (2024), Marah Haj shares personal memories from Belgium and the languages ​​she uses here. The performance moves between languages, geographies, voices, and imagination, and is an attempt to explore multilingualism.
The dance performance In relation to whom?, by Marah and Nur Garabli, premiered in the spring of 2026. Both performances are touring extensively in Belgium and abroad.
