Annelies Van Hullebusch is an artist and performer. With objects, cards, maquettes, illustrations, text, audio and books she continuously searches for the most fitting medium for her work.
Her creations are characterised by her great love of craft and detail. She usually starts creating out of a personal reason or need, which she then expands and universalises through her working process. Paper and (the beauty of) books remain her childhood fascination. Back then she would design newspapers for her neighbourhood and later on -not coincidentally- follow a course in bookbinding. Still, it is the simplest, unadorned white paper that sparks her enthusiasm the most. For her, the appeal is in creating an entirely new world in a sort of non-sacred ritual.
Words like theatrical and grandiose do not apply to her work as the format she likes to think and work in is (very) small. The amount of audience is typically limited and inherently connected with a specific scenography. In recent years, she has been searching for ways to present her work to larger groups of people without having to give up the intimate quality of her work.
Her new visual participative performance VOUW (‘FOLD’) will premiere on 1 December 2024 at hetpaleis, Antwerp (B). In the 2025–2026 season, PAPIERLIED ('PAPER SONG') and VOUW (‘FOLD’) will both return.
More information on PAPIERLIED ('PAPER SONG') can be found here. English info about VOUW ('FOLD') will be provided later.
